We have enjoyed getting into the holiday spirit this month with our “month of giveaways” and we hope you’ve enjoyed it too. As we enter the Christmas season, we want to remind each of you (and ourselves) of the true meaning of the season- that is, love. It is always better to give than to receive. There’s nothing like warming your heart by giving of yourself to someone else. We hope each of you will feel the joy of the season by giving this year- whether that means giving items, money, time, talents, an open heart, forgiveness, or a smile.

Handmade, Organic Goodie Bag {Giveaway Month}

Organic Themed Goodie Bag Giveaway {HomeSweetHomebodies}

This is week 3 of our handmade giveaway month! Our first week we partnered with Drill Bits and Oven Mitts and gave away a beautiful, vintage reclaimed wood holiday sign. Last week, we gave away a gorgeous cable crocheted headband, as well as 2 pdf patterns for headbands from our boutique. This week, I am excited to present a luxurious, all natural, organic-themed goodie bag for one lucky reader!

This week’s prize is all about wellness, and treating our bodies right! There are seven fabulous, self-pampering items in this giveaway- worth $60! Keep it for yourself, or give as a very special handmade gift.

Goodie Bag Giveaway items {Home Sweet Homebodies}

  1. Handmade goodie bag- This works fantastically for storing your cosmetics, nail polishes, etc., or as a wetbag- because the inside is lined with fused plastic bags, making it water resistant. This goodie bag is an interesting mix of old and new- the fabric is current, the zipper is vintage, and the fused plastic- well, you could call that “hipster recycling”. If you wanted to. 😉 ($14 value)
  2. Detox Bath Salts- We all pick up toxins from the environment we’re in, the things we eat, and chemicals that touch our skin. This packet of super luxurious bath salts will help pull those toxins out, while affording you a much- deserved soak in the tub. This blend of high quality bath salts includes epsom salts, sea salt, Redmond real salt, and magnesium flakes, and is scented with relaxing lavender essential oil and revitalizing peppermint. ($8 value)
  3. Trust Fund Beauty nail polish- this is the only non- handmade item of this giveaway, but I included it because it is a nail polish that is truly non- toxic and cruelty free. Win! ($15 value)
  4. Super smooth, organic lip balm. I shared a post yesterday on how to make these lovely lip balms. I will probably be listing them in our shop, though, for those who want a ready-made option. ($4 value)
  5. Hard Lotion Bar- another extremely nourishing, organic beauty item! If you haven’t used hard lotion bars before, they are fantastic. The warmth of your skin melts a tiny bit of the lotion, and you rub it in. It is long lasting, and it’s nice to let kids use too, because they can’t squirt it everywhere- they just get a bit. I use mine on my hands and on my lips sometimes too. These bars have organic coconut oil, beeswax, avocado oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter in them, and are lightly scented with essential oils. ($6 value)
  6. Measuring tape bracelet. Ok, this is just a fun, handmade statement piece. This bracelet is adjustable, and it has an attractive silver buckle to fasten it. Perfect for those who sew and/or design. ($9 value)
  7. Measuring tape key fob- another “just-for-fun” piece for the fashion- minded. Includes a key ring. ($4 value)

Fun stuff, right? :)

Cable Crochet Headband {Home Sweet Homebodies}

New Crochet Pattern!

I LOVE to crochet.  It is so therapeutic, and so rewarding. I think I just love the fact that I can put my creative energy into some yarn, and turn it into something useful, like a blanket, or scarves, or more recently, headbands. I like that I have something physical to show for my time.

  I have crocheted since I was about 7… Which is kind of crazy, now that I think about how young I was when my grandma taught me (and how long ago that was.. I’ve been crocheting for over 20 years…whoa).  Every time I sit down to crochet something, I think back to my childhood when I would have “crocheting lessons” from my grandma.  She would work on her AMAZING doilies, and I worked on crocheting scarves and blankets. I didn’t realize then how much I would treasure that crocheting time with her, but I have always remembered that she made the time to teach me something she loved.  It has meant so much to me throughout my life.

Cable crochet headband

I’ve always loved cabled knits, and wanted to learn how to make them. For awhile I have been thinking it would be cool to make a crochet headband pattern with a cabled texture, but I’ve always been intimidated by how fancy the cabled texture looks. But after trying a few cabled crochet patterns and getting comfortable with how they work, I finally sat down and made my own pattern for a cable crochet headband. It is much easier than I expected it to be, and I love how it looks!  This (along with the other headband patterns in my shop), is very quick to make (I can make them in one evening), and makes a great gift! So, with the upcoming holidays in mind, I am now selling the pattern for this headband in the etsy shop here!

This pattern uses the following stitches (you can easily find tutorials online for each stitch):

– Ch – chain
– Slip stitch
– sc – Single crochet
– dc – Double crochet
– bpdc- back-post double crochet
– fpdc- front-post double crochet
– fptr – front-post treble crochetIMG_1139

Sugar & Spice Body Scrub

Sugar & Spice Body Scrub {Home Sweet Homebodies}

We’ve been enjoying perfect fall weather.  And I’ve always loved fall, but this fall is extra magical for me. I have had so much fun decorating and creating this season! I would love to share a few of the things I have been working on. If you follow us on Instagram, you have seen a couple of these things! Today I’m just going to share this Sugar and Spice Body Scrub. It’s a simple sugar scrub, and it makes a great gift, especially if you package it up in a pretty glass jar.

Sugar & Spice Body Scrub- Gift {Home Sweet Homebodies}

With the chillier temperatures, why not treat yourself to a warm, relaxing bath- made even more luxurious with some homemade bath products, like this Sugar & Spice Body Scrub.

DIY Sugar & Spice Body Scrub {Home Sweet Homebodies}

Would you like to make some? Here’s my recipe:

Sugar & Spice Body Scrub
{Home Sweet Homebodies}

3/4 cup Raw Cane Sugar (package might say “sugar in the raw” or “natural cane turbinado sugar”)
1/2 cup White Sugar
~3 Tbsp. coconut oil
1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
Dash each of nutmeg, ginger, and ground cloves
Optionally: 4-5 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil, 1-2 drops Clove Essential Oil (You definitely don’t have to include essential oils, but I like using them. If you want to buy essential oils, but don’t want to join a MLM company, check out these high quality oils that I trust- and no, I don’t get paid at all for recommending them. Just my own personal experience: Mountain Rose Herbs and Nature’s Fusions.)

Mix ingredients together well. This will fill one 8 oz size glass jar. Feel free to play with quantities or use other baking spices. Make it your own. :) Make sure to label your creation, and decorate it any way you like. This makes a great gift. (FYI you want to avoid plastics and aluminum when storing and mixing things that contain essential oils.  Mixing in a glass bowl with stainless steel or silicone utensils is ideal.)

I hope you get a chance to pamper yourself this week- this scrub would be a great way to do that! >wink< :)

Gift Wrapping on the Cheap

Christmas Double Post: (I promise this is it!)

One of my most favorite parts about the Christmas season is wrapping all the Christmas gifts I’ve gotten for my family. It usually takes me several weeks to pick them all out and/or make them all, but the best day of December is the day I finish my shopping and DIYing, pile all the gifts up and start wrapping.

This year, we underestimated the amount of gifts we’d be wrapping and only bought one roll of wrapping paper and some ribbon. Luckily we had a pretty good stockpile of Trader Joe’s Christmas bags and brown packing paper from the Dollar Store.
I used a bottle ring to trace circles on the Trader Joe’s bags to make all the gift tags which was fun and I think they turned out cute!
I also had a bunch of random ribbon, netting and twine, so I used every square inch of my wrapping paper by making accent wrapping paper bows using a tutorial from Ziploc (I couldn’t find the original pin, but it is exactly like this one).

My Christmas Glitter Etravaganza- a little late :)

Yes, I know it’s March, but sometimes life happens and you take forever to write about Christmas. (It’s still winter-ish right? No. It’s spring. Oh well.)

So this Christmas I wanted to give gifts from the heart. I also didn’t want to spend $101,283,047,484.99 on Christmas gifts, because we’re newlyweds. And we have huge families. And sometimes Christmas is hard. So I did what any crafter would do and started looking around my craft room and on Pinterest.

I recently acquired a TON of different colors of glitter, and I’ve been accumulating blank canvases like a hoarder, thinking I’d remember how to paint some day. That still hasn’t happened, so I’ve had quite the display of white ‘art.’
Lately deer silhouettes have been really popular in home decor, and so awhile back I wanted to do something cute for my office (I’ve been there 6 months and I have nothing on the walls in my office still. People keep asking me if I’m planning on leaving. I’ll get on that ASAP- posts to follow. At least I have a window..).
So I found one of my tiny canvased, printed out and traced a little reindeer silhouette and then I found some Elmer’s glue and my gold glitter. 3 minutes later I had made this cute little bad boy that sits on the bookshelf in my office: (I recently added some twine to it so I can hang it on the wall, but I’ll post on that later too).
Then I forgot about it.
UNTIL Christmas was around the corner. I thought this would be a great Christmas to DIY my gifts, but I completely Pinterest-failed making an ornament wreath for my Mother in Law (it wasn’t terrible, but not Mother-in-Law-gift-worthy. More like hang outside where its mostly dark and nobody-will-look-at-it-closely-worthy). I really like to give Christmas-themed gifts, and then I remembered the glitter deer and a light bulb went off: RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER!!
I found an 8×10 canvas, so all I needed was a printed out version of the silhouette (I used a different reindeer silhouette with a more prominent nose so the red nose would pop), Elmer’s glue and Gold and Red glitter. I think I spent less than $4 and I think it turned out pretty cute! It was a big hit with my Mother-in-law, (and I made one for my parents and sister and a friend too!)
Previous to my reindeer epiphany, I had found the cutest little tiny canvases at Walmart and I really wanted to do something with them. I made ornaments for my husband’s siblings (and I forgot to take photos :(, but they are cute!) and I still had some left over. I thought they might be cute if I attached them to some twine in a banner, so I decided to make this one for Rochelle’s family:
And then I made this one for our youngest sister Anna:
At this point I was having a glitter-frenzy and I was on a roll. Our friend Lindsay got married right before Christmas as well, and we had no time to go buy a gift. I’ve seen cute monogram wedding gifts before, so to finish off my Christmas glitter extravaganza,  I took another canvas I had laying around and made this little number with their wedding date:
Suffice it to say, this Christmas definitely glittered.
